Amanda Xuereb

Amanda Xuereb, Head of Business Development at Toly Group and Founder of Beauty Trill took to social media to highlight an issue many workplaces tend to leave unaddressed – generational gaps.

“Generational gaps are the main issue between Executive Leaders of a company and the younger generation working at that company,” Ms Xuereb wrote.

She explained how this phenomenon can often be the reason many companies ‘struggle’ to retain millennial talent and appeal to younger audiences.

“As a millennial myself, I have often encountered the phrase: ‘this is how it has always been done’ or ‘this is the process one has to follow’… times change and companies need to change with them,” Ms Xuereb continued.

To solve said problem, Ms Xuereb suggests the implementation of ‘reverse mentoring programmes’.

As its name suggests, this practice takes on the opposite format of conventional mentoring, with the younger employees mentoring their leaders – a technique with “many benefits,” Ms Xuereb said.

During a session of this practice, the younger employee would be given the opportunity to educate their superior on topics of strategic and cultural relevance.

“There is great value in experience and history but having been successful in the past is no longer enough, we need to constantly reinvent ourselves and our businesses,” Ms Xuereb highlighted.
