Despite an unprecedentedly difficult year for Malta’s hotels and accommodation sector, many have used the period of instability and forced closures to prepare for better days ahead.

Beginning a refurbishment process in 2019, The Waterfront Hotel in Sliema, a four-star hotel belonging to the Mizzi family, got a complete makeover following a €9 million investment, which included the addition of 49 new rooms and 11 new suites.

Maria Micallef, CEO at The General Soft Drinks Company Ltd and The Waterfront Hotel shared how the investment “reflects the company’s vision to elevate the tourist experience by creating a modern and comfortable space for accommodation and leisure.”

Ms Micallef highlighted the company’s efforts during a visit from the Minister for Tourism and Consumer Protection, Clayton Bartolo, and CEO of the Malta Tourism Authority, Johann Buttigieg, alongside the Waterfront Hotel’s Managing Director, Brian Mizzi, and General Manager, Charmaine Camilleri.

The CEO explains how, throughout the pandemic, the team at the Waterfront Hotel took various measures and initiatives to strengthen business “and in preparation for the reopening of the tourism sector in June”.

Ms Micallef also stressed “the importance of the various initiatives taken by the Government which significantly helped the HoReCa sector during the pandemic.”
