Malta’s national airline’s casual tweet brought Jack Whitehall to Malta.
A chance social media exchange between comedian Jack Whitehall and former Air Malta Head of Marketing Daniel Balzan has come full circle five years later, after the pair finally met in Malta.

Mr Balzan, who now serves as Director of Marketing and Communications at Transport Malta, reflected on the encounter in a LinkedIn post, recalling what he described as one of the most memorable marketing moments of his career.
The story dates back to the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest, when Mr Whitehall posted on social media: "I don't know where the f* Malta is."
At the time, Mr Balzan was heading the marketing team at Air Malta, which had supported the Maltese Eurovision delegation with flights. Watching the final and following Mr Whitehall's commentary, he decided to respond with an invitation offering the comedian two complimentary tickets to visit Malta and find out for himself.

The exchange quickly went viral, attracting attention from both local and international media and generating widespread discussion across the island.
Five years later, Mr Balzan and Mr Whitehall met in person while the comedian was in Malta to host the Golden Bee Awards as part of the Mediterrane Film Festival.
Sharing a photograph of the meeting, Mr Balzan said the pair laughed about the now-famous exchange.
Reflecting on the experience, he said the episode demonstrated that "some of the best marketing isn't a campaign. It's a quick reply, good timing, and turning a joke into an invitation."
