It has been five years since GO Ventures has been launched, and on this note, Paul Grech, Senior Manager in charge of Strategy and Investments at GO plc and Head of Investments at GO Ventures, reflects on the journey that began as an experimental initiative.

In 2019, GO Ventures set out as the first corporate fund in Malta dedicated to investing in start-ups.

Reflecting on the past five years, Mr Grech admits that GO Ventures’ approach has evolved significantly, and wrote that what the team initially believed would work in 2019 has been reshaped by experience.

However, one thing has remained constant, he wrote, and that is the focus on identifying great start-ups with the potential to disrupt their sectors. As a result, GO Ventures has refined its criteria, seeking out start-ups with tech-based disruptive ideas, a strong link to telecommunications, and a proven capacity for growth, he wrote on his social channel.

Mr Grech also noted that Go Ventures have positioned themselves as a partner for founders looking for support at the Seed or Series A stage, and that today, their “idea of what works is totally different from what we believed five years ago.”

A strategic investor in Malta’s start-up scene

Mr Grech’s leadership at GO Ventures reflects his extensive background in telecommunications, business development, and strategic investment.

He has been “instrumental” in orchestrating the acquisition of Sens Innovation Limited and Cybersift by GO plc while establishing GO Ventures as a thriving Corporate Venture Firm “built from the ground up”.

As GO Ventures enters its next phase, Mr Grech remains optimistic about the opportunities ahead.
