In a world of constant distractions, where slipping back into work mode is easier than ever, how much do Malta’s top CEOs and business leaders value their down time?
In a series of quick-fire questions first published in the print edition of MaltaCEOs 2026, business leaders opened up about how much sleep they get each night and whether they work weekends.
Although several CEOs report sleeping less than the recommended seven hours, many still rate their sleep positively.
Wolfgang Tweraser, CEO of TW Consulting & Trade, said that while he only sleeps four hours a night, he still rates his sleep a full 10 out of 10.
Corinthia Group CEO Simon Naudi also gave his sleep top marks, although he does sleep more - up to six hours a night.
Shireburn Software CEO Adrienne McCarthy, also among the top sleep scorers, reported six to eight hours of sleep.
Unsurprisingly, new parents Robert Debono, CEO of the db Group, and Denise Xuereb, CEO of AX Real Estate, scored their current sleep patterns a pretty dismal 5.
Aurelia Ferreira, CEO of Theoria Contractors, is one of the few to report sleeping up to eight hours every night and rates her sleep an 8.
BOV CEO Kenneth Farrugia gets five-six hours of sleep, St James Hospital CEO Jean-Claude Muscat gets five, and Concept Stadium CEO Jonathan Dalli describes himself as a “known insomniac”.
Several CEOs do work weekends to some extent.
“I work 24/7 unfortunately, I’m a workaholic,” Sciberras Advocates CEO Adrian Sciberras admitted.
Similarly, OKX Europe CEO Erald Ghoos described himself as being “on 24/7” while Business First CEO Marika Tonna admitted she is “glued to her phone”.
Ing. Abigail Cutajar, CEO of the Climate Action Authority, said that while she does work weekends, she isn’t proud of it.
Some set clear boundaries around weekend work.
For example, Vassallo Group CEO Pio Vassallo may work Saturdays but never Sundays, while M&Z CEO Greta Camilleri limits her weekend work to early mornings.
The Convenience Shop CEO David Tabone said that while he “never really stops” working, his focus over the weekend tends to be on family and friends.
Other business leaders self-impose strict weekend cut-offs.
St Thomas Hospital CEO Angelle Falzon said she uses her weekends as time to recharge her batteries, while Eurobridge CEO David Abela maintains a strict work cut-off to safeguard his mental health.
“I’d rather work longer on weekdays than at weekends,” Alter Domus Malta CEO Przemyslaw Koger stressed.
