The Point Shopping Mall, Malta’s premier shopping and leisure destination, is thrilled to announce that it has won the Project Green Bronze Award at the Malta Business Awards 2024. This prestigious award recognises outstanding initiatives that contribute to greening urban spaces and adopting sustainable practices. The Point’s Urban Oasis, a pop-up garden launched earlier this year, was celebrated for its innovation, sustainability, and environmental impact.

In April 2024, The Point introduced the Urban Oasis – a vibrant 200sqm garden located in the heart of Tigné Point. The initiative aimed to provide a much-needed green space in an area heavily impacted by construction. Featuring 1,500 carefully selected plants, the garden quickly became a peaceful retreat in the bustling city centre. Designed with relaxation and well-being in mind, the Oasis offered visitors and residents alike a visual and sensory escape from urban life.

The success of the Urban Oasis lay not only in its aesthetic appeal but also in its sustainable design. The project aligned perfectly with the criteria for the Project Green Award, emphasising the use of native plants, water-efficient landscaping, and eco-friendly materials. By integrating sustainable practices into the design and upkeep of the space, The Point made a significant contribution to improving local air quality and increasing biodiversity.

One key feature of the Oasis was its ability to engage visitors with nature. Informational cards detailing the plants and their ecological benefits enhanced the educational value of the space. Movable benches allowed people to adjust the space to suit their needs, creating a flexible and accessible environment for everyone.

More Than Just a Garden: A Space for Wellness

The Urban Oasis was conceived as more than just a garden – it was designed as a space to promote mental well-being. The Point partnered with the Richmond Foundation to offer a range of mindfulness and relaxation sessions in the serene surroundings of the garden. These sessions allowed individuals to reflect and rejuvenate while immersed in nature.

In addition to wellness activities, the Oasis hosted gardening workshops for children, yoga classes, and art sessions, which educated the younger generation about the importance of nature and sustainability. These activities brought together families, tourists, and residents, offering them opportunities to bond and connect with the natural world.

The Urban Oasis proved to be an extraordinary success, not just for its aesthetic appeal, but for its impact on the local environment and The Point’s standing in the community. The green space helped beautify an underutilised area and addressed the pressing need for accessible green spaces in an increasingly urbanised Sliema. The Oasis received overwhelmingly positive feedback from residents, many of whom expressed appreciation for the greenery and tranquility it brought to the area.

From a business perspective, the Oasis significantly enhanced The Point’s reputation as a community-conscious shopping destination. The initiative reinforced the mall’s commitment to corporate social responsibility, showing that businesses can thrive while having a positive environmental impact. The success of the project also demonstrated that well-maintained green spaces can significantly improve the quality of life for urban dwellers, offering a peaceful retreat amidst the urban hustle.

Looking Ahead: Expanding the Green Vision

Winning the Project Green Bronze Award was a significant achievement for The Point, but the journey did not stop there. The success of the Urban Oasis has inspired the team to explore further opportunities to create more green spaces in the future. The Point remains committed to promoting sustainability, environmental stewardship, and community well-being.

The Point Shopping Mall’s dedication to sustainable practices and green urban initiatives will undoubtedly inspire future projects that benefit both the environment and the local community. The Urban Oasis stands as a testament to the positive impact that businesses can have when they prioritise sustainability, wellness, and community engagement.
