As expansion work begins on the Malta International Airport’s eastern wing, focus now turns to completing the project on time while keeping the terminal operational.

In a LinkedIn post, MIA CEO Alan Borg said that while a project of this magnitude will not be straightforward, it is a necessary step forward.

“This is a necessary growing pain if we are to remain among Europe’s leading airports,” he said. 

The project will see the installation of five new Schengen departure gates and 32 new check-in desks, along with an upgrade to the baggage handling facilities. 

Mr Borg has stressed that this €345 million investment isn’t being carried out simply to increase the airport’s capacity but to improve the overall experience for travellers. 

“By the end of 2028, Malta International Airport will be geared to deliver a five-star departure experience, with enhanced facilities, increased circulation space, and a much stronger sense of place,” he said.
