HSBC Bank Malta

HSBC Bank Malta on Thursday (today) announced that it has named Alexiei Dingli as Non-Executive Director with effect from 24th January 2024.

The process to obtain regulatory approval for Professor Dingli to become a member of the Board of Directors started a number of months ago in order to replaces Yiannos Michaelides, who had reached the end of his tenure with the bank.

He is a Professor of Artificial Intelligence (AI) at University of Malta and has been conducting research and working in the field of AI for more than two decades, assisting different companies to implement AI solutions. His work has been rated World Class by international experts and he has won various local and international awards. He has also published several peer-reviewed publications and formed part of the Malta AI task-force which was set up by Government, aimed at making Malta one of the top AI countries in the world. He recently made headlines for securing a €1.3 million investment, the highest ever, on Malta’s Shark Tank, a business-themed television programme providing entrepreneurs with the opportunity to secure business deals.

Professor Dingli is a Bachelor of Science in IT (Hons) graduate, having obtained the degree in 2001 from University of Malta, and has a Ph.D in AI from University of Sheffield in the UK, as well as a Master of Business Administration in Technology Management from Grenoble Business School in France.

He recently spoke to MaltaCEOs.mt about the need for businesses make AI adoption an integral part of their business models in order for them to remain competitive, with emerging technologies having an impact across different industries.

Professor Dingli said that he is “deeply honoured” to join the bank, adding that in today’s rapidly evolving digital age, he believes that his background in technology and AI will “contribute significantly to the bank’s journey towards innovation and digital excellence.”

“Embracing technological advancements is not just an option, but a necessity for the banking sector, and I am excited to be at the forefront of this transformation with HSBC Malta,” he remarked.

“I look forward to working closely with the Board and the entire HSBC Malta team to build a future that is not only prosperous, but also technologically advanced and customer-centric,” Professor Dingli added.

John Bonello, Chairman and Board Member at the bank, said that he is very happy that Professor Dingli has agreed to join the Board of Directors and warmly welcomed him.

“I am sure that his skills and personal qualities will dovetail well with what is already a committed and effective Board,” he added.

He also proceeded to thank Mr Michaelides for his contribution to the Board of Directors through his “technical knowledge and commercial experience.”
