As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, Bank of Valletta (BOV) announced its collaboration with Din l-Art Ħelwa (DLĦ) to restore the historic Church of San Ċir, Malta’s oldest medieval church.
Located in the limits of Rabat, below Mtarfa, the church is considered one of the most treasured structures from the time period and is believed to have been built between 1450 and 1500. The restoration works are set to begin shortly.
The collaboration was announced during a visit paid by BOV CEO Kenneth Farrugia, accompanied by COO Ernest Agius, and Head Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Events Charles Azzopardi.
Mr Farrugia was met and shown around by Patrick Calleja, President of the NGO.
The church of San Ċir, nestled within the magisterial estate of Ġnien is-Sultan, stands as a remarkable testament to Malta’s rich heritage.
With its unique pitched roof, the church has largely remained unchanged over the centuries, adding considerable value to its historical significance.
Despite its various uses over the years, including as a cow shed, the church has stood the test of time.
During the visit, Mr Agius highlighted the meticulous work required to preserve the intricate details of the church.
“The restoration is not just about sponsorship. It is a commitment to our shared history,” he continued.
Additionally, Mr Farrugia expressed his satisfaction in supporting this conservation project. “This initiative aligns perfectly with the heritage aim of our CSR programme.”
From his end, Mr Calleja expressed gratitude for BOV’s support. He shared that the church “has been left in a dilapidated state for decades, and we look forward to seeing it restored to its former glory.”
In agreement, they noted that this partnership ensures that the church will continue to be a treasured landmark for future generations.
