Martina Zammit

For entrepreneur and CEO of Gadgets, Martina Zammit, starting her own business was a mix of hunger, passion, having lots of ideas, and also, being with the right person at the right time.

In a video shared to social media, which formed part of a webinar on ‘Idea to Market’ organised by Enterprise Europe Network and Malta Innovation Forum, the CEO shared her business journey and what she believes it takes to achieve entrepreneurial success.

Martina co-founded the company, VSquared, in 2008 with Rachel Cachia, who is now its CEO, after two years working together. “We had ideas, we both had dreams and we wanted to make them happen,” she said. “When you have the entrepreneur feel inside you, it’s not only about dreaming and thinking up ideas, it’s also that you make those ideas happen.”

She says that spark came to them in Rachel’s living room, where they decided to challenge the perception that “TV in summer is dead and TV schedules only exist from October to June”, by producing a TV drama that would run in summer. “As soon as we said it, we knew this is it, we believed in it.”

Sharing her views on what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur, Martina says “it means you taking decisions fast. The time factor is a big issue nowadays – the industry is fast, the market is aggressive, and if you take long to take decisions, you might be missing out on a lot of opportunities.”

The CEO also highlighted a challenge she believes every start-up or company will inevitably face: “when you become stale, or repetitive. You need to realise this and realise that it is time to take your product or service to new heights.”

“One of the most important things I’ve learnt is that your ideas are built and your successes are achieved only and thanks to the problems and challenges that you have faced along your journey.”
