Convenience Shop Group CEO David Tabone said a strategic move to directly employ all its subcontracted staff, some 200 people, is already yielding positive results.
The group implemented this policy last year with the intention of creating a more engaged, loyal and skilled workforce. This was part of a broader strategy to strengthen its workforce, which included a comprehensive training programme.
Mr Tabone tells MaltaCEOs.mt that direct employment creates a clearer and more direct relationship with the company, which many colleagues value.
It also provides greater stability, a stronger sense of belonging to the business, and a closer connection to the teams and operations they support every day.
“Our medium-term objective was to have a completely engaged, trained, and loyal team serving our customers,” he said.
“This could not be achieved without having directly employed staff in our outlets. We are now in full control of each team member’s training, personal career development paths, and incentives, with the sole aim of improving our service standards in all our outlets to the benefit of our customers.”
He said the company believes this move has had a positive impact on engagement and the overall employee experience.
Mr Tabone said the obvious benefits of this move have already made a substantial difference, with recruitment and staff reunion improving.
“Whilst we are constantly optimising our operational procedures, the feedback we are getting from our customers and staff is extremely encouraging,” he said.
