Matthew Bezzina, CEO of eCabs, has highlighted that the greatest challenge facing the international taxi industry today is the temptation to resist transformative change.
In a sector where technological advancements and evolving customer expectations are reshaping operations, Mr Bezzina believes legacy taxi operators in European and global markets risk falling behind if they fail to adapt.
According to Mr Bezzina, this success is rooted in the company’s ongoing investment in its digital offering, including partnerships with global leaders like the Google Maps Mobility Platform and the recruitment of top talent from leading ride-hailing tech players. He shared these insights in a feature on EU-Startups and is set to elaborate further as a keynote speaker at the upcoming Start in Malta Festival on 17th and 18th of October, at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre (MFCC) and the adjacent park in Ta’ Qali.
The CEO went on to write about the principles of the “innovator’s dilemma” to explain the predicament traditional taxi companies face.
The theory, introduced by Harvard Business School professor Clayton Christensen, posits that established businesses often struggle to embrace innovation that initially seems less profitable or disruptive, despite its potential to redefine the industry.
For Mr Bezzina, this dilemma is particularly pronounced in the taxi industry, where digital-first competitors such as Uber and Bolt have transformed customer expectations.
By offering seamless app-based bookings, transparent pricing, and faster response times, these platforms have set a new standard, forcing traditional players to rethink their approach. The CEO emphasised that, in Malta’s case, maintaining a competitive edge will require operators to continuously innovate and stay ahead of technological shifts.
“Many taxi operators have failed to invest in modern systems and customer-centric models,” Mr Bezzina remarked, and addad that “the temptation to ignore these shifts in favour of maintaining the status quo can prove detrimental. Those who do not embrace change now will find themselves losing relevance in a highly competitive marketplace.”
Mr Bezzina has positioned eCabs as a forward-thinking operator, heavily investing in technology and focusing on sustainability.
The company’s recent strategic decisions include the launch of eco-friendly fleet options and the ongoing development of a robust mobile app that mirrors the user experience of its global competitors. According to Mr Bezzina, such investments are crucial to staying at the forefront of the mobility market.
Today, eCabs stands as the only locally grown ride-hailing operation in Malta, with its platform powering businesses in other jurisdictions as well, including Romania.
Reflecting on the evolving landscape, he noted that innovation in the taxi industry is no longer a luxury—it is a necessity for survival.
Whether it is the rise of electric vehicles, the growing importance of data-driven operations, or the ability to provide a smooth digital experience, Mr Bezzina’s message to taxi operators is clear: adapt, or risk being left behind.
