Ivan Sammut, Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen at the Malta Ship Registry took to social media to celebrate Malta’s re-election to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council for the 13th consecutive term.

“We are honoured that IMO member states have, once again, given us their strong support… We will not disappoint them and will work even harder to help prepare IMO and the maritime sector for the future,” Mr Sammut wrote on social media.

“As one of the world’s largest maritime nations, it is important for us to be represented at the highest level, so we can ensure that IMO remains the global focal point for the regulation of shipping in these crucial years for the sector,” he continued.

The IMO is the United Nations specialised agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. Its main role is to create a regulatory framework for the shipping industry that is fair and effective.

“We take the IMO Council responsibility seriously as international shipping is important to global trade and Malta is an important maritime jurisdiction,” the Registrar General added.

“We want to ensure fairness in rules so that all maritime stakeholders can compete on a level playing field. The ultimate objective is to make shipping more efficient, safer, and greener,” he concluded.

The IMO Council is the executive organ of the IMO and is responsible for supervising the work of the organisation
