Jake Schembri has been appointed Head of Strategic Partnerships at Maltese cybersecurity firm Merqury Cybersecurity.

Founded by quantum physicist Prof. André Xuereb in 2022, Merqury was established to bridge the gap between quantum research and real-world cybersecurity needs.

It was the technical lead of the recent PRISM EuroQCI project, which established a quantum-secured communications testbed over existing telecoms infrastructure as part of an EU-wide cybersecurity strategy.

Mr Schembri joined the company in 2023 to focus on communication and stakeholder engagement but his responsibilities grew into business development and partnerships.

He described working on the PRISM project and helping coordinate Merqury’s involvement in the recent Airbus Defence and Space demonstration as particular highlights.

“Seeing our small team’s work here in Malta contributing to these initiatives gives me a genuine sense of national pride,” he said.

“Thank you to Prof. André Xuereb for trusting me to take ownership of my work and giving me the space to grow. I’m also grateful to Dr Noel Farrugia and the rest of my colleagues, from whom I’ve learned a great deal over these three years. I’m proud to work alongside every single one of them.”

“My focus now is on developing partnerships that help bring our technology into more deployments and generate business. I'm passionate about what we’re building, and I’m looking forward to contributing in this new role.”
