Father’s Day is a time for gratitude, for pausing to reflect on the wisdom and values passed down through generations. For many, fathers are silent mentors, shaping our lives through example, encouragement, and the kind of advice that stays with us forever.

To celebrate this special day, MaltaCEOs.mt asked a few leaders in Malta’s business community to share the most memorable lessons or advice they received from their fathers. Their responses are a heartfelt tribute to paternal influence, resilience, and the quiet strength of fatherhood.

Patrick Debattista, Financial Coach

“I couldn’t give you everything you wanted, but I tried to give you everything I never had.”

Sometimes, the most powerful lessons are spoken in simple truths. For Patrick Debattista, this statement from his father encapsulates the deep love and sacrifice many fathers quietly carry. It’s a reminder that while material things come and go, values and opportunity are gifts that endure.

Malcolm Portelli, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), Andaria Financial Services

“As a child, I always admired my father for finding a good balance between work and family life. Without even knowing, he taught me the importance of hard work and caring about what you do, but always remembering that time with family is precious.

Later in life, the indirect teachings continued, where after retirement he was able to reap the rewards of his hard work by enjoying time with friends, practising hobbies and travelling.

This was all possible due to financial foresight which taught me the power of investing in your future, as well as the present.”

Mr Portelli’s reflections show how a father’s actions can speak louder than words. Through his father’s life choices, he learned not only professional values but also the importance of living fully – today and tomorrow.

“My father sadly passed away five years ago, and due to his sickness (dementia), I really lost him many years before his demise. However, he was the one who guided and encouraged me to continue studying by enrolling at the University of Malta to study Accountancy. I am forever grateful for his insight and guidance.

I also admired his resilience and how hard-working he was, ensuring that myself and my three siblings had all the necessary tools to move on in life. On a light note, he was a fervent supporter of Manchester United, and his enthusiasm watching his favourite team win gave me a different perspective on who he was when he was able to relax and enjoy life outside of his busy work schedule.”

Ms Spiteri Bailey’s words paint a touching portrait of a father who led with love, determination, and a touch of football fandom.

Petra Urso, CEO and Co-founder, MediaHut Ltd

Petra Urso with her father, Arnaldo Urso

“This Father’s Day, I honour the man whose quiet strength and unwavering dedication shaped not only my childhood, but the working mother I am today. My father didn’t just raise me – he taught me how to build a life.

Growing up, I watched him juggle long hours in banking, teach part-time, and continue studying – all while being fully present for our family. His sacrifices were silent, consistent, and profound. He never sought praise; he simply led by example.

From him, I learned discipline and resilience. He showed me that ambition doesn’t have to come at the cost of compassion or family. That balance is hard-won, but possible.

His advice is still my compass – whether it’s navigating a career challenge, a tough parenting moment, or simply staying grounded in chaotic times. He has never stopped guiding me, cheering me on, and reminding me of my worth.

In many ways, my father was my first mentor. He taught me how to lead with humility, how to keep learning, and most importantly, how to show up – for myself and those I love.

Today, I thank him – not just for what he did, but for who he is. A father. A teacher. A role model. And the reason I walk into every room with strength, grace, and purpose.

Happy Father’s Day to the man who gave me everything without ever asking for anything in return. I owe it all to you.”

Her tribute reads like a love letter to her father’s legacy – a man who balanced duty and devotion, leaving a lasting imprint on her life as a leader, mother, and woman.

Patrick Tabone, Managing Director, Sigma Coatings

Patrick Tabone

“My dad taught me to negotiate really hard, but always with respect for the other party. He taught me that compromise is very important, but never when it comes to your integrity. That I should always do everything not just well, but to the very best of my ability. That it’s good to try new things.”

With this clear and practical advice, Patrick Tabone highlights the kind of business wisdom that starts at home. His father’s guidance reflects timeless values: integrity, excellence, curiosity, and respect – the very traits that build strong professionals and stronger people.

A Tribute to Every Father

Whether through words, actions, or quiet examples, fathers play a crucial role in shaping who we become. These heartfelt reflections from Malta’s business leaders remind us that a father’s legacy isn’t just about what he gives – it’s about what he inspires.

Me and my father many moons ago

As a journalist, I’ve been fortunate to hear many powerful lessons shared by others. But one of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever received came from my own father – a farmer, and in many ways, a businessman in his own right. He once told me, “Sometimes in business, you need to make very quick decisions. The best way to do that is to always try and lead with a clear mind.”

It’s simple, but it’s stayed with me. Whether in a newsroom or on a field, clarity and calmness can turn a tough call into the right one.

This Father’s Day, we honour all fathers and father figures who lead with love, teach with patience, and shape futures with their wisdom.
