The General Court of the European Union (EU) has appointed its judges to preside over its ten Chambers, with Maltese Judge Eugène Buttigieg elected as one of the Presidents.
Professor Buttigieg brings with him a distinguished career spanning public service, academia and private practice, and has been serving as a Judge at the EU’s General Court since 2012.
After graduating as Doctor of Laws from the University of Malta in 1986, he pursued advanced studies abroad, earning a Master of Laws in European Legal Studies with distinction from the University of Exeter as a Chevening Scholar, and later completing a Ph.D. at the University of London with a thesis on safeguarding consumer interests under US and EU competition law.
Admitted to the Maltese Bar in 1987, Judge Buttigieg began his career in the Government legal service, holding posts at the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before moving into academia.
Over nearly three decades at the University of Malta, he rose through the ranks from Lecturer to Professor of EU Law, and in 2009 was awarded the prestigious Jean Monnet Chair in EU Law.
He has published extensively in areas including competition, consumer and intellectual property law, while also serving as Visiting Professor of Competition Law at Queen Mary University of London.
Beyond academia, Professor Buttigieg has contributed his expertise as a legal advisor in both the private and public sectors, including at the Ministry of the Economy and the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority.
He also held roles on national boards and authorities, such as the Copyright Board and Malta Resources Authority, and is a co-founder and vice-president of the Maltese Association for European Law.
