Joshua Ellul, Chairman at the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA), has been appointed Associate Professor at the University of Malta (UoM).

Dr Ellul first joined UoM in 2013, as a Senior Lecturer. There, his areas of expertise and research interests include blockchain, smart contracts, virtual machines, technology regulation, and AI regulation.

Throughout the past eight-and-a-half years, Dr Ellul has built up a strong lecturing portfolio, made up of the following modules, amongst many others: Digital Health Systems, Blockchain and Smart Contracts, and Internet of Things.

Throughout his time at the University, Dr Ellul has also been involved in the setting up of the Centre for Distributed Ledger Technologies. Prof. Ing. Saviour Zammit chairs said Centre whilst Dr Ellul serves as its Director.

Dr Ellul has been serving as the MDIA’s Chairman since November 2018. Based in Mriehel, the MDIA is the primary authority responsible for promoting governmental policies that promote Malta as the centre for excellence for technological innovation whilst setting and enforcing standards that ensure compliance with any other international obligations.

The Chairman’s past positions include Expert Evaluator at the European Commission, and Post-doctoral Researcher at Imperial College London and IBM Research Zurich.
