Life has a habit of changing direction in an instant – a truth many leaders recognise, but few expect to experience between a game of fetch and a trip to the emergency department.

For one iGaming executive, that moment came unexpectedly this week.

Betstarters Director of Operations Mauro Miceli was having a simple play session with his dog which ended in a fractured left elbow, a scheduled operation, and the realisation that both his birthday and Christmas will be spent in a cast.

“Not exactly how I imagined wrapping up the year,” he told his community on LinkedIn. “One minute you’re laughing, the next you’re planning surgery and rethinking the week ahead.”

Yet the setback has brought with it a familiar reminder – one that resonates strongly within fast-paced sectors like iGaming: plans break, momentum shifts, and unpredictability is the only constant.

“It’s something I’ve learned again and again in this industry. Unexpected things happen. All you can do is adapt, refocus, and keep moving forward.”

The timing couldn’t be more symbolic.

After a year already marked by significant personal and professional change, this injury has delivered a new, very literal lesson in patience, resilience, and the uncomfortable art of slowing down.

“Work will look a little different over the next weeks – typing one-handed, moving slower, getting creative with what I can and can’t do – but I’m still here, still committed, and still pushing ahead,” said Mr Miceli.

“If anything, moments like this reinforce how important it is to stay flexible in both mindset and career. Because apparently, my elbow wasn’t.”

In a sector defined by agility, he now carries a timely reminder: sometimes the biggest leadership lessons come from the most unexpected disruptions – even a fractured elbow during playtime with the family dog.
