Natalie Briffa Farrugia, Chairperson at Vassallo Group, on Friday (today) expressed her delight at the launch of the new Dar San Ġużepp elderly home, managed by CareMalta, in Għajnsielem.

This comes after the elderly home was inaugurated by Prime Minister Robert Abela on Thursday morning, who described it a place that “offers quality of life to Gozitan elders.” Aside from the Prime Minister and Ms Briffa Farrugia, the inauguration ceremony was also held in the presence of Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri, CareMalta Group CEO James Sciriha, CareMalta Group’s Board of Directors and management team, and Vassallo Group’s Chief Executives.

The project has been planned for a number of years, with Government renting the Church property back in 2013. The project was then granted a development permit in 2014, before works on converting it into an elderly home started in 2015. However, the project faced repeated delays due to legal issues, before in 2023, court upheld a decision to award a €30 million Government contract to CareMalta to equip and manage the elderly home.

The home started welcoming its first guests in recent weeks, with it having around 120 beds spread across four floors.

Commenting on the event, Ms Briffa Farrugia said: “Another page in our journey, another milestone for our group!”

“Dar San Ġużepp is a gem of a home in Għajnsielem, enjoying spectacular country and sea views. But most of all, it is a reflection of our vision, one that focuses on the older person within the community,” she affirmed.

She remarked that CareMalta and the wider Vassallo Group is proud to “step into the care sector in the heart of Gozo.”

Prior to the ceremony, Prime Minister Abela and Minister Camilleri met with Dar San Ġużepp’s residents and workers.

During the inauguration, Prime Minister Abela stressed the need for the elderly to remain active, living independently at the heart of the community, even when they are in elderly homes. He remarked that the size of the country can be seen as an advantage, helping the elderly to remain involved in the community.
