Pio Vassallo

As a new system for the issuance of masons’ licenses gets underway, CEO of Vassallo Group Ltd Pio Vassallo has spoken out in favour of reforms within the local construction industry, during a site visit with Planning Minister Aaron Farrugia and Construction Parliamentary Secretary Chris Agius.

“We have always pushed for the reforms which are needed for this sector, reforms related to health and safety in construction sites, and training of workers which has unfortunately been missing for several years,” the CEO of one of Malta’s largest construction companies said.

“We have always been trailblazers in the sector, and we look forward to further consultation between the government and the private sector to develop a successful reform.”

The new system for masons’ licenses is being viewed as a step in the right direction when it comes to updating local construction industry standards and practices, placing greater emphasis on safety and sustainability, which the sector has been criticised for in recent years.

“During this visit, we met with workers at their place of work, including builders and stonemasons who have acquired this license. We also discussed a particular aspect of this reform through which we intend to license and register construction site workers. This will provide more peace of mind to families, as well as a more sustainable construction industry,” the Planning Minister said during the same visit.

“I think that this is another important step towards having a better-regulated sector,” Parliamentary Secretary Agius continued.
