Anton Buttigieg Cropped

Following his recent departure from TradeMalta after more than a decade as CEO, Anton Buttigieg has confirmed he is taking on a new role as International Trade Advisor, allowing him to continue supporting Malta-based businesses as they scale beyond local shores.

Speaking to MaltaCEOs.mt, Mr Buttigieg said the shift will enable him to offer more specialised and hands-on support to companies pursuing internationalisation. “As International Trade Advisor, my focus is to provide Malta-based businesses with more strategic, tailored guidance as they scale internationally,” he explained. His immediate priority is to help companies strengthen their export readiness and refine their market-entry strategies, particularly in high-growth markets across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

Reflecting on his decade leading TradeMalta, he noted that the experience taught him the importance of agility, partnership, and providing support that is fully adapted to the needs of each business. “Every company’s journey is different, and the most effective results come from customised strategies grounded in real market intelligence,” he said. He added that navigating global disruptions and building institutional partnerships over the years will directly shape the advisory work he delivers in his new capacity.

Mr Buttigieg has long cultivated strong relationships in regions that are increasingly central to global trade. These connections, he said, will now play a crucial role in opening doors for Maltese enterprises. “Over the years I’ve built strong, trusted relationships across these regions, and I intend to tap those networks to help Malta-based companies connect with the right partners, institutions, and opportunities,” he remarked. His aim is to translate these international links into “tangible commercial openings and long-term collaboration for Malta-based businesses.”

With international trade continuing to evolve at speed, Mr Buttigieg believes Malta is well positioned to engage with the high-potential markets he will be focusing on.
