Edward Scicluna is set to resume his responsibilities as Governor of the Central Bank of Malta and as a member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank (ECB), following a formal request he submitted to Prime Minister Robert Abela and Minister for Finance Clyde Caruana.
The Prime Minister held consultations with the ECB, which, as an independent institution, raised no objections to Prof. Scicluna’s request.
This morning, Dr Abela updated the Cabinet of Ministers on the latest developments. The Cabinet responded favourably to Prof. Scicluna’s request to return to the post.
The Cabinet also expressed its appreciation to Deputy Governor Alexander Demarco, who had taken on the role of Acting Governor of the Central Bank of Malta in recent months.
Prof. Scicluna has a longstanding career in both national and European institutions, having served as Malta’s Minister for Finance and as a Member of the European Parliament, prior to being appointed Central Bank Governor in 2021.
Chairman Alfred Pisani meanwhile said the group will increasingly focus on profitability with a focus on regular dividends.
