Joanna Popiol, Director of Luginsland Limited, is spearheading a multi-year project to restore one of Malta’s historical treasures. She passionately leads the LuginsLand of Art restoration project alongside Omenaa Mensah, the CEO of the OmenaArt Foundation, based in Poland. The foundation is a pioneer in implementing artistic projects in Poland as well as across Europe and is dedicated to engaging in philanthropic efforts to support the arts in Malta and beyond.

Joanna Popiol along with Omenaa Mensah, aims to restore the historic site in Rabat, Malta to its former glory. Combining her love for art and history, she oversees a team of international experts to renovate Villa Luginsland, which has been rebranded as ‘LuginsLand of Art’, into a space to celebrate contemporary art, exhibitions, and artistic events. Given the scale and historical significance of the LuginsLand of Art project, each phase has been carefully planned and is being executed to preserve the building’s authenticity while infusing new life into the space.

Joanna is known for her exceptional leadership. She meticulously manages the project to honour the Villa’s heritage and remains determined to ensure every detail aligns with the investor, Omenaa Mensah’s, vision for the Villa.

You are the director of Luginsland Limited, the company leading the restoration project at LuginsLand of Art alongside the OmenaArt Foundation. Can you share a bit about your journey and how you became involved with Luginsland Limited and the OmenaArt Foundation?

I’ve always had a deep passion for art, history, and meaningful projects. My journey started with a strong foundation in Communication Studies, but I gained the most valuable insights working as a Sales Executive in various European markets. The experience taught me the importance of strategic vision and the power of collaboration. When I was introduced to the vision of LuginsLand of Art, I felt an immediate connection. Partnering with the OmenaArt Foundation was a natural fit—both organisations are committed to preserving cultural heritage while pushing the boundaries of art.

What inspired you to take on the challenge of working on restoring one of Malta’s historical sites alongside Polish philanthropist, Omenaa Mensah?

Malta is rich in history and culture, yet many of its architectural gems are often overlooked. It is a pleasure to join forces with Omenaa Mensah on this extraordinary project. When she shared her inspiring vision for LuginsLand of Art with me, I was immediately drawn to its transformative potential.

The idea of breathing new life into this historical site, while preserving its essence, is incredibly motivating. Luginsland Limited, Omenaa Mensah and the OmenaArt Foundation want to create a space where history, art, and preservation can coexist. Initially, this project brought forth diverse challenges, but for me, that only made it more exciting. Together, we are driven by a shared passion for restoration, and we are equally thrilled to witness the culmination of this project in the coming years, as LuginsLand of Art transforms into a beacon of heritage.

What is the vision behind the LuginsLand of Art project?

LuginsLand of Art is about more than just restoration; it’s about reinvention. The team’s vision is to create a multidisciplinary culture hub where art and history intersect. We want to build a space that not only honours the past but also inspires the future—a place where artists, entrepreneurs, and thinkers can come together to collaborate and bring new art and ideas to life. By combining Malta’s rich cultural heritage with local and foreign restoration expertise, we’re curating a unique environment that will serve as a catalyst for creativity and artistic development.

How do you see the project impacting Malta’s art and cultural scene?

I believe LuginsLand of Art has the potential to be a game-changer for Malta. By attracting local and international artists alike, we aim to create opportunities for cultural exchange and collaboration. This project will not only preserve a significant part of Malta’s heritage but also breathe new life into the local arts and culture sector. We aim to position Malta as a key player on the global cultural map. Upon project completion, I envision LuginsLand of Art becoming a landmark that boosts tourism, supports local artists, and drives new ventures, ultimately enriching the island’s economy and cultural landscape.
