Sullivan Maritime has appointed Karl Sullivan as Managing Director and Nigel Sullivan as Commercial Director, marking a new chapter in the family-owned maritime company’s leadership as it celebrates its 30th anniversary.

The appointments follow the passing of company founder Ernest Sullivan in April. With his two sons now taking on senior leadership roles, the transition represents continuity for the business as it enters its fourth decade of operations.

The Sullivan family has operated and managed businesses in sectors including shipping, hospitality and finance for more than a century, spanning four generations. Malta’s strategic geographical position and strong maritime tradition contributed to these sectors being lucrative opportunities.

Shipping, in particular, has become closely associated with the Sullivan family name, supported by Malta’s strategic position in the Mediterranean and its longstanding maritime tradition. Over the generations, the family has built a presence in the sector serving both local and international markets.

Under the new structure, Karl Sullivan will take on responsibility as Managing Director, while Nigel Sullivan will oversee the commercial side of the company as Commercial Director.

"Our father's lesson was that a business is only ever as good as the care you put into it. The responsibility now is ours: to carry what our father built forward, guided by the same vision and the same principles, and to do it in a way that would have made him proud. His real legacy is the values he set and the team who kept them, many have been here for decades, some since day one. We work hand in hand with them, as a family company with an open door, and that is exactly how we intend to go on," says Karl Sullivan who has been with the company since 2014. Meanwhile, Nigel has been with the company since 2009.

"This is very much a third-generation relationship between Grimaldi and Sullivan Maritime and our first duty is to look after the relationships we already have, because they took decades to earn. From there we intend to grow our existing lines, deepen the partnerships we hold, and open new services where we can genuinely add something for Maltese trade," added Nigel.

The dual appointment places the next generation at the helm of both the operational and commercial aspects of Sullivan Maritime at a significant point in its history.
