Productivity

The 2024 National Productivity Report by Malta’s National Productivity Board (NPB) outlines strategic insights for employers and executives to navigate the twin transition – integrating digital innovation and environmental sustainability.

This transition is pivotal for enhancing productivity, resilience, and competitiveness in Malta’s economy.

Aligning business strategies with the twin transition

Employers are encouraged to embed sustainability and digitalisation into their core business strategies. This involves adopting renewable energy sources, implementing circular economy practices, and leveraging digital technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data to optimise operations.

By doing so, businesses can address structural challenges like resource inefficiencies and skills mismatches, positioning themselves competitively within the EU framework.

Investing in workforce development

A critical recommendation is to invest in upskilling and reskilling the workforce to meet the demands of emerging industries. According to the report, employers should collaborate with educational institutions to align curricula with market needs, particularly in STEM fields.

Promoting lifelong learning and providing training programs will equip employees with the necessary skills to thrive in a digitally driven and sustainable economy.

Empowering SMEs through support mechanisms

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a vital role in Malta’s economy. The report suggests providing tailored support to SMEs to facilitate their adoption of sustainable and digital practices.

This includes access to financing, knowledge-sharing platforms, and simplified regulatory processes. By empowering SMEs, employers can drive innovation and inclusivity within their sectors.

Enhancing infrastructure and policy engagement

Employers should advocate for and participate in the modernisation of infrastructure, focusing on renewable energy systems, digital connectivity, and sustainable transport solutions. Engaging in public-private partnerships and stakeholder forums will ensure that business perspectives are integrated into policy development. This collaborative approach will facilitate cohesive implementation of green and digital initiatives, aligning with national and EU-level goals.

By proactively engaging with these strategies, employers and executives can lead their organisations through the twin transition, contributing to Malta’s vision of a sustainable, productive, and inclusive economy.
