The Melita Foundation is funding a series of computer courses aimed towards promoting digital literacy amongst those with no prior experience of using computers.

These courses, aimed particularly towards senior citizens, are being organised by the Zejtun-based Paulo Freire Institute – a charitable entity set up by the Maltese Jesuits.

“The Paulo Freire Institute has, over recent decades, empowered hundreds of people through its education, counselling, and community-based programmes,” Melita Foundation Chair Tanya Sammut-Bonnici said.

“The Melita Foundation is also focused on helping everyone in society benefit from technology and we are therefore more than happy to support these courses which will help those who attend to begin acquiring the skills to improve their lives,” she continued.

The Melita Foundation supports and funds projects that align with two focus areas: digital skills and creativity, and heritage and environment.

The entity is governed by a Board composed of individuals that are involved with Melita in other capacities. These include CTO Simon Montanaro, Head of Marketing Mireille Muscat, and Head of Legal and Regulatory Affairs Gertrude Borg Micallef.

“Computer literacy is so important in today’s world. It is essential to stay in touch with loved ones and in our working lives. Our Institute has always worked hard to listen to the needs of the vulnerable in society and to provide practical support that can make a difference,” Paulo Freire Institute Director Fr Edgar Busuttil SJ said.

“This is just what these computer courses are designed to do, and we are grateful to The Melita Foundation for their support which is helping us to run multiple courses during summer,” he concluded.
