The Convenience Shop Group on Tuesday announced that João Carlos Rente Correia has been appointed Chief Operating Officer (COO), with effect from 1st May 2024.

As a result, he has replaced Jonathan Smith, who served in the position for over a year. The group proceeded to thank him for his services and wished him well in his new endeavours.

Mr Correia first joined The Convenience Shop in January, having been appointed Executive Assistant to the CEO. His responsibilities in the position included the implementation of transversal initiatives under a defined strategic plan.

He has over 20 years of experience in the retail, logistics, agri-food and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry across Europe, West Africa, and South America. Prior to joining the group, he served as CEO at Grupo Amiria, which operates an international chain of supermarkets.

Taking to social media, Mr Correia said that the past few months at The Convenience Shop have served as an “incredible journey of growth and opportunity.”

“I am grateful for the support of my colleagues, mentors, and leadership team throughout this transition. Thank you to everyone who has been part of my journey so far. I am honour to continue contributing to the success of our company in this expanded capacity and eager to lead our team towards new heights of success,” he added.

Mr Correia describes himself as being passionate about “driving business success and fostering a culture of growth and innovation.”

He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration issued by the European University, and a postgraduate degree in Operations and Supply Chain Management from University of Liverpool. He also successfully completed an Advancement Management Executive Programme and a General Management Executive Programme, both from Porto Business School.

The Convenience Shop, a leading retail chain in Malta, opened its first outlet in Żebbuġ back in 2009. As at the publishing of its Annual Report in April, the retail chain had a total of 91 stores spread across the mainland, and has also announced plans to open its first store in Gozo during 2024.
