Eni North Africa, a major client of Malta-based MedservRegis, announced it has discovered more than a trillion cubic feet of gas off the shore of Libya.
MedservRegis co-CEO Olivier Bernard said the discovery is significant to the Malta-based industrial logistics firm.
“This matters to us at MedservRegis plc,” he said.
“Through our bases in Malta and Libya, we’ve been supporting drilling and development operations in the Libyan offshore for years. Since late 2024 we’ve seen a genuine restart of activity, and it’s showing up in our numbers.”
Mr Bernard explained the potential significance of the discovery, particularly in light of global disruptions to gas supplies following Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
“The bigger picture is hard to ignore. Libya sits at the doorstep of Europe,” he said.
“When geopolitical tensions are making energy transport more complicated by the month, having a producing basin this close to the continent — connected by existing infrastructure — carries real weight.”
“This is not the same as booking LNG capacity from the other side of the world.”
“Libya has its challenges, and anyone in this industry knows them. But the upstream is moving. We’re ready to support what comes next.”
The gas was located in two wells 85km off the Libyan coast and 16 km south of the Bahr Essalam gas field, the largest offshore field in Libya.
The gas will be developed via the existing Bahr Essalam complex, supplied to the Libyan market and exported to Italy.
