Mario Gauci Jr

As the summer season gets underway, Malta’s temperature has already started to shoot up while the country enjoys brighter and longer days.

This type of weather can be tiring or draining, and several find it difficult to go about their day as they would do so in winter. However, there are others who fully embrace the season.

One such person is Burmarrad Group Director Mario Gauci Jr, who is motivated by the hot summer months thanks to the opportunity to truly relax after a hectic workday, whether that’s by socialising, heading to the beach or enjoying a nice dinner.

For the first entry of this year’s MaltaCEOs.mt summer interview series, we caught up with Mario to learn more about what his plans are for the coming summer, together with his ideal places to travel to.

A life in business has been ingrained in him from his early years, having officially joined the family business at the age of 19. However, despite his senior position at the automotive supplier, Mario still finds time to unwind and let loose, even during summer.

Are you a summer person, or do you prefer winter? Why?

Absolutely! Summer brings so much joy and energy, and I embrace every moment of it. I love the warmth of the sun and the vibrant colours that come with the season. The longer days give me a chance to work my customary long hours yet have the motivation to go and read a good book by the beach or enjoy outdoor moments with my partner, our dog, and the family.

Are you looking forward to this summer in particular? Why?

Primarily, this summer will be about finding the right balance between professional growth and leisure. My aim is to seek a blend of relaxation, intellectual stimulation, and cultural immersion like exploring both local and overseas art exhibitions and attending concerts.

What’s your favourite thing to do in the summer season? Why?

My favourite things are savouring long lunches, enjoying seaside vistas, meeting with loved ones and friends, and venturing into new gastronomic adventures by trying out different restaurants.

Do you prefer going out or staying inside during the hotter months?

During summer, I always prioritise quality time with loved ones. Whether it’s hosting intimate dinners, nice long lunches by the sea, attending social events, or organising informal meetups, I embrace opportunities to strengthen bonds and create lasting memories.

However, I do appreciate occasional moments spent indoors, to recharge, especially when it’s sweltering.

Will you be going abroad? If yes, where to and why?

Yes, I will be traveling to Romania for a wedding of a member of my extended family there, which will give me the opportunity to spend some quality time with them. I will also be travelling to Luxembourg to meet friends and to watch a concert of one of my favourite jazz bands, Pink Martini.

What’s your dream summer destination? Why?

A road trip along the US West Coast has always intrigued me, starting from Seattle, down to San Francisco and then stop for a few days in Los Angeles What appeals to me about the West Coast is its fusion of natural beauty and urban sophistication. Also, I have some nice restaurant suggestions that I cannot wait to try out.

What’s your best holiday experience?

I cannot pinpoint one holiday experience as being the best, but visiting Australia has always been fun. On my last trip there, we flew to New Zealand and did a road trip there. I was mesmerised by the country’s beauty. I cannot wait to go back.

What’s your worst holiday experience?

I am a very lucky man, as I’ve never had a bad holiday experience. Barring the occasional airport delay, I have always enjoyed myself. I choose my holidays very carefully!

Companies are encouraged to invest to stay ahead of the curve. As a business leader, how will you be investing in yourself this summer?

I’ll be attending local seminars and conferences, as well as visiting exhibitions abroad, allowing me to connect with like-minded individuals and learn from industry leaders in order to stay ahead of the curve and bring fresh ideas and insights to the workplace.

From recharging your batteries to taking on a huge task – do you have any particular goals for the summer?

From a professional standpoint, the goal is to keep consolidating the investment done at Burmarrad Group’s new Marsa facilities. Also, with the successful introduction of the Enterprise Rent-a-car brand, we are now enjoying an upward trajectory and currently increasing the fleet to meet demand. In addition, I will also be focusing on exciting real estate projects we have in the pipeline.
