The Olympics have officially started in one of the world’s fashion capitals: Paris, France.

While all eyes will naturally fall on the athletes, similar to the Wimbledon Championships, supporters on the stands will also attract the cameras.

Influencers have had their say about what style supporters should wear to attend the Olympics through a number of videos on TikTok.

The three main colours are the classic blue, white and red – like the French flag – with Olympic fashion being geared towards minimalistic, chic and comfortable attire.

@carolinecarel Replying to @sophiejonesss Olympics are so so soon!! This is what I’d wear! Hehe Sophie, I’m so jealous you get to go to Paris to watch in person. Similar to Wimbledon, the oldest tennis tournament in the world, and unlike other sporting events like the World Cup, attire is expected to be more formal as attendees will not only be supporting their athletes, but also representing their own home countries.

In a New York Times column called ‘Ask Vanessa’, a reader who will be at the Olympic events found herself at a loss on what outfits are appropriate.

Vanessa Friedman, Fashion Director and Chief Fashion Critic of the New York Times sought the help of a friend based in France to outline the most pertinent rules.

Here are the go-to rules to follow in order to attend the Olympics both fashionably and comfortably:

Light and breezy: A cotton tote bag

Tote bags have become a very popular alternative to the everyday handbag. For travelling, such bags are even more convenient as they can easily be folded and placed in another bag or hand luggage, making them a very convenient accessory.

Pack for different experiences

While a Parisian summer is hot, it can also experience “cool spells.” Prepping for summer weather while not excluding some light layers was highly recommended.

Comfortable shoes

Travelling in already busy cities during major events might lead to more walking as crowds tend to be larger. Additionally, such events often lead people to be on their feet for long hours. Therefore, comfortable yet stylish shoes are the go-to item for the Olympics.

Replacing athleisure with linen and light clothing

According to this article, France’s fashion faux pas this summer are short shorts, flip-flops, naked dresses and crop tops.

The article highlights that athleisure for streetwear should be replaced by linen button downs, tailored shorts, sundresses and skirts that are comfortable enough to sit down in.
