BigWig Headhunters Chief Operating Officer (COO) David Borg on Thursday noted that people in the business world need to prepare themselves for anything that the future might present, including unexpected layoffs.

He said that with various companies across the globe opting to downsize and reduce their operations, a situation which he acknowledges is not currently taking place in Malta, “it never hurts to consider keeping yourself prepared for any future situations”. These range from unforeseen layoffs to instances that prompt people to reconsider their futures and change their jobs.

As a result, Mr Borg listed five different ways through which people can best prepare themselves for the unexpected and be ready for what the future holds.

Firstly, he noted that it is integral for people to keep their resumes and LinkedIn profiles up to date and that they “highlight” their skills, experience, and achievements.

He also acknowledged that they have to “build and maintain” a professional network by connecting with colleagues, industry contacts, and recruiters.

Mr Borg also said that people need to update and develop their skillset. “Invest time in learning new skills that are in demand in your industry. Take classes, attend workshops, or pursue certifications,” he explained.

Aside from work-related matters, he also emphasised the importance of building an “emergency fund”. “Aim to have at least three to six months of living expenses saved up in case of job loss or change or other unexpected financial expenses,” he continued.

Lastly, he pointed out that people need to remain “positive and proactive” during such challenging moments. “While it can be difficult to stay motivated during times like these, try to stay upbeat. Consider taking on contract or freelance work, or even volunteering, to stay active in your field,” he said.

“By taking these steps, you can be better prepared for anything unexpected and be in a stronger position to quickly bounce back and find new opportunities,” he concluded.

Mr Borg is vastly experienced in recruitment, culminating in the founding of BigWig Headhunters and its sister brand WigWam Recruitment. Prior to that, he worked at European eXecutive Search for over 18 years, initially as Headhunter – German Equities, and then as Senior Account Manager, before he was promoted to Partner – European Equities. He states that he enjoys “finding the right people for the right role, not just any person for any role”.

Apart from his career in recruitment, he is also an established name in the local radio industry, best known as “Ozi”, where he was part of XFM 100.2’s The Big Breakfast show ft. Oz and Jay for almost six years, and was also Drive Time Presenter at the radio station for more than eight years.
