ElectroGas ‘proud to support Żibel’: ‘Protecting Malta’s seas requires practical action’

Protecting Malta's marine environment requires practical action and strong partnerships, Electrogas Malta CEO Jorge Perez said as the company highlighted its commitment to protecting Malta's marine environment through its support for the organisation Żibel.

ElectroGas Malta partnered with Żibel, a Maltese environmental non-profit organisation dedicated to protecting the marine environment, to support a series of coastal and underwater clean-up initiatives aimed at safeguarding Malta's coastline and raising environmental awareness.

Mr Perez praised the organisation's practical approach to recovering, recycling and repurposing waste removed from the sea.

Commenting on the collaboration, Jorge Perez said: "We are proud to support Żibel's work, not only because of the remarkable amount of waste removed from our coastal and marine environment, but also because of the organisation's commitment to recovering, recycling and repurposing materials wherever possible."

“The findings from these clean-ups are also a reminder that many of the items ending up in our seas are products we use every day, making responsible waste disposal a shared responsibility."

As part of this collaboration, ElectroGas Malta sponsored three clean-up events held between February and April 2026, including two clean-ups in Gżira and a third at Ta' Xbiex Creek Marina. Together, these initiatives brought more than 150 volunteers together and resulted in the removal of over 5.3 tonnes of waste from Malta's marine environment.

Among the waste recovered were more than 1,100 glass bottles, 179 tyres, abandoned fishing gear, plastic debris and large quantities of metal waste. The presence of these items on the seabed is a powerful reminder that seemingly small acts of littering can have lasting consequences for Malta's marine environment, particularly in coastal areas where discarded waste can quickly make its way into the sea.

ElectroGas Malta chose to support Żibel because of the organisation’s holistic approach to environmental action. Beyond removing waste from the sea and shoreline, Żibel carefully sorts the material collected, identifies what can be recovered or recycled, and is exploring innovative ways of repurposing waste that would otherwise end up in landfill.

Founded in 2017, Żibel has evolved from organising community clean-ups into delivering specialised environmental projects, including ghost net removals, microplastic research, environmental surveys and artificial reef initiatives. The organisation's focus on recovery, reuse and long-term environmental impact distinguishes it from traditional clean-up initiatives and reflects the type of practical action that ElectroGas Malta aims to support, it said.

By supporting initiatives that deliver tangible environmental outcomes and encourage community participation, ElectroGas Malta said it remains committed to contributing to the protection and preservation of Malta's natural environment for future generations.
