Few landmarks carry the weight of history and identity that St John's Co-Cathedral holds for Malta. Its Baroque ceiling, painted by Mattia Preti, is one of the country's defining cultural achievements, and today it stands at a critical juncture.
A fundraiser is now underway to address the effects of time, humidity and environmental exposure on the ceiling. The initiative aims to raise €6 million over six years, applying the highest international conservation standards to secure the artwork's future.
This comes at a moment when the foundation's conservation credentials have never been stronger. Its team has recently been entrusted with safeguarding further Mattia Preti masterpieces at the Jesuits' Church in Valletta, alongside conservation projects across the islands, evidence of an institution increasingly recognised as a genuine centre of excellence in heritage conservation, not only within its own walls but across Malta's cultural landscape.
For Malta's business community, the campaign is an invitation rather than a simple appeal. It offers a rare opportunity to play a direct role in protecting a cultural icon that draws visitors from around the world and shapes Malta's international reputation. It also reflects a broader shift in how heritage is sustained, with public institutions increasingly turning to private sector partnership, not only for funding, but for shared stewardship of what is preserved.
In return, participating organisations gain genuine visibility, access to exclusive experiences within one of Malta's most prestigious settings, and association with a project of lasting national significance.
At its core, this initiative is about legacy. It puts a direct question to today's business leaders: What role will you play in ensuring one of Malta's most important stories is preserved for the generations who come after us?
