Summer in Malta is more than just a change in temperature – it’s a shift in pace. From seaside dinners and family holidays to simply finding a quiet spot to unwind, the season brings its own set of rituals, even for some of Malta’s busiest CEOs.

We caught up with Jonathan Bellizzi, CEO of Lidion Bank, Andrea Cassar, CEO of Cassar Marine Group, and Stefan Farrugia, CEO of Eunoia Ltd, to hear about their summer plans, favourite places to unwind, and the dishes and drinks that define the season for them.

Simple pleasures and big adventures

For Mr Bellizzi, this summer is about taking it slow. “Nothing planned at this stage,” he shares, “aside from a few days off in August to recharge ahead of the final, busy stretch of the year.” Sometimes, the best summer plans are no plans at all.

Ms Cassar, however, has an exciting itinerary lined up. She’s heading to New York with her daughter, who has been awarded a dance scholarship – a proud moment for them both. Later on, the family will reunite for a “trip filled with adventure” to Yellowstone National Park. “We are looking forward to creating lasting memories together,” she says.

Meanwhile, Mr Farrugia is continuing a tradition he’s come to treasure: Summer travels with his family. “Over the past few years, we’ve built a tradition of travelling as a family during the summer, and I’m really grateful that we’re managing to keep it up again this year,” he says. This time, he’s planning a more active escape – trekking with his younger daughter somewhere surrounded by mountains and fresh alpine air. “It’s our way of connecting, just the two of us,” he adds, describing these trips as a much-needed digital detox and a chance to recharge.

From Valletta sunsets to Gozo hideaways

When it comes to favourite summer hangouts, each CEO has their own special place.

For Mr Bellizzi, it’s all about simple moments outdoors with good company, and Wied iż-Żurrieq holds a special place in his heart for exactly that.

Ms Cassar is drawn to the quieter charms of Gozo, with Mġarr ix-Xini topping her list. “There’s something truly special about the island,” she says. “It’s the perfect place to disconnect and recharge.”

Mr Farrugia, on the other hand, enjoys the magic of Valletta at sunset, often ending the day with a cocktail at a favourite restaurant. “There’s something magical about the city as the sun dips,” he reflects. Yet, for him, unwinding is less about location and more about company. He loves driving out to Armier with his family and dogs to watch the sunset – a simple ritual that he finds “deeply grounding.” He’s also a fan of spontaneous weekend getaways to Sicily, praising its food, scenery, and slower pace of life.

From BBQs to Burrata

Summer wouldn’t be complete without its signature dishes and drinks.

Mr Bellizzi keeps it classic with fresh fish, which he enjoys on warm evenings by the sea, paired with a glass of wine.

Ms Cassar favours light and fresh meals – think salads, burrata, and seasonal ingredients. “It’s the perfect way to enjoy the flavours of the season while keeping things simple and refreshing,” he shares.

Mr Farrugia, a self-professed BBQ enthusiast, loves the communal aspect of outdoor cooking. “Summer and BBQs go hand in hand for me,” he says, describing his ideal evening filled with grilled seafood, vegetables, and marinated meats. His drink of choice? A crisp gin and tonic. Hosting BBQs is more than just about food for him – it’s a way to slow down, connect, and create lasting memories.

I must admit, I’m a BBQ lover too – there’s nothing quite like gathering friends or family around the grill on a warm evening, sharing stories and enjoying good food under the stars.
