In its bid to be a catalyst for peace and prosperity, the United Nations has enacted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015. The agenda essentially provides for a shared vision of how nations can work together for a better tomorrow. At the heart of this ambitious vision are 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which take the shape of an urgent call for action by all countries in a variety of sectors – all central to fair and sustainable development.
Local Fintech company Mellifera has been busy in the past months getting rather familiar with these goals, as it is taking an active role in quite the ambitious project, to get companies involved in driving the necessary change to turn these SDGs into fact.
The AI for Good Innovation Factory Malta which is being run by Mellifera, is a United Nations-backed project, which is being hosted in collaboration with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), aimed at positioning Malta as a hub for AI-driven solutions that tackle global challenges.
“The core mission of this project is to connect startups with the tools and networks they need to succeed, while showcasing how AI can support the UN’s 17 SDGs which include climate change, healthcare and education amongst others. It has been quite the exciting journey so far, and we can’t wait to enter the next, even more thrilling phase of this project,” says Joseph Camilleri, Chair at Mellifera.
Joseph brings with him many years of experience in fund management, having occupied various senior leadership roles in several aspects of the financial services industry.
“Our project doesn’t only fit within the UN’s ambitions for the future, but it also aligns perfectly with Malta’s AI 2030 strategy, as we aim to nurture startups and foster AI innovation,” Joseph explains.
“We are passionate about supporting new entrepreneurs and startup founders on their journey. By providing tools, mentorship, and resources, we aim to empower startups to address global challenges through AI and align their work with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The AI for Good Innovation Factory Malta, brings together a great deal of what we stand for.”
This year’s call for applications, which has just closed in the past days, drew an impressive 35 entries, spanning nearly all 17 SDGs. The diversity of ideas highlights AI’s potential to drive meaningful change across multiple domains. A panel of experts has their work cut out for them as they are currently shortlisting the best applications, with finalists expected to advance to a February-March bootcamp.
“During the bootcamp, startups will receive mentorship tailored to their needs, practical tools, and international networking opportunities. Masterclasses on fundraising, marketing, product development, and AI best practices will help participants refine their ideas and get them ready to hit the ground running when the time comes. The journey will culminate in a Malta finale in March, where one outstanding startup will be selected to represent Malta at the global AI for Good grand finale in Geneva this July.”
“Our participation in initiatives like The AI for Good Innovation Factory Malta, underscores our drive to push for Malta’s growing prominence on the global AI landscape. Though Malta has already made some impressive strides in the AI game, we believe that there is more potential for growth. Much has been said about AI already, yet through this project, we’re driven to work towards AI being a force for good,” Joseph adds.
By aligning with the AI 2030 strategy, Mellifera and its partners are creating a platform that connects local talent with global opportunities, reinforcing Malta’s reputation as an innovation hub.
“Artificial Intelligence is here to stay. It’s up to us to use it to benefit the planet and humanity. At Mellifera, we want to be there for ambitious startups which have the vision to create solutions that will make a real difference,” Joseph concludes.
