Former Bank of Valletta executive Albert Frendo has joined Lidion Bank as an Independent Non-Executive Director, following the receipt of the required regulatory approval.

Mr Frendo, an accountant by profession, brings with him more than three decades of banking experience, having spent over 30 years at Bank of Valletta before leaving the institution in 2023.

During his time at the bank, he was responsible for the stewardship of the Credit Function and gained extensive experience across cost management, financial reporting, risk management and credit finance. For 12 years, he headed BOV’s Risk Function before later being entrusted with the management of the bank’s overall credit portfolio, overseeing key areas including Corporate, SME, Consumer and Trade Finance, Collections and Collateral Management.

He also played a role in launching Risk Sharing Instruments in Malta aimed at SMEs, including JEREMIE, CIP, SMEG, SME Initiative (JAIME) and SME Invest.

Mr Frendo later served as Chief Business Banking Officer, where he oversaw one of the three key pillars of BOV’s revamped business model alongside Retail Banking and Investments.

In 2024, he was appointed chairman of Alberta Group.

According to a company announcement issued by Lidion Bank, Mr Frendo’s appointment became effective on 14th May 2026.

The announcement also noted that Mr Frendo currently serves as director of MM Star Malta Finance plc, MM Triton Malta Finance plc, Finestday Malta plc, Excel Finance plc and Burmarrad Group Assets plc.

The banking stalwart holds a degree in Accountancy from the University of Malta and an MBA specialising in Management Consulting from Grenoble Graduate School of Business.
