Following his razor-thin victory in the Nationalist Party’s (PN) leadership election, newly appointed Leader Alex Borg has been greeted with congratulations from Malta’s leading business lobbies – each outlining areas where they hope to see constructive engagement and fresh ideas.
The Malta Chamber emphasised the importance of a strong and credible Opposition, describing it as “essential in a healthy democracy.” In its statement, the Chamber stressed that competitiveness, sustainability, governance, and long-term economic resilience will require particular attention in the years ahead.
The Malta Development Association (MDA) echoed this sentiment, while highlighting sector-specific challenges. President Michael Stivala stated: “We look forward to engaging constructively with the new PN leadership on matters of sustainable development, how we can achieve affordable housing without giving away public land for free to the chosen few, risking creating a collapse in this important sector and long-term economic growth.”
Meanwhile, the Malta Employers Association (MEA) described Dr Borg’s election as “an important milestone in the development of Malta’s political landscape.”
The MEA said his role as leader of an alternative Government will be crucial in shaping policies that foster innovation, competitiveness, and sustainable growth. It added that it remains committed to collaborating with all stakeholders to ensure that Malta continues to thrive in “an increasingly dynamic and challenging global environment characterised by uncertainty.”
With Dr Borg becoming the PN’s fourth leader since 2017, business stakeholders are making clear that they expect his leadership to bring not just renewal for the party, but also substantive engagement on Malta’s long-term economic and social priorities.
