Kurt Farrugia

Discussions are currently ongoing about who will be appointed to lead Malta Enterprise, the Times of Malta has revealed.

In a news report published on Friday, it stated that Malta Enterprise’s current CEO, Kurt Farrugia, will be taking on the role of Transport Malta CEO in the coming days.

Malta Enterprise is the country’s economic development agency, tasked with attracting new foreign direct investment as well as facilitating the growth of existing operations. In recent years, it was central in deploying pandemic-related support schemes and distributing financial aid, elevating its status as a key agency for the local business community.

The agency helps businesses with the use of various schemes, which are developed to help promote and expand enterprises and start-ups of different sizes. Some of the schemes launched by Malta Enterprise include, Business Development, Business Start, Skills Development, Smart & Sustainable Investment Grant, and Microinvest.

Mr Farrugia has been CEO of Malta Enterprise since 2019 and was a central figure in the Labour Party under the leadership of former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.

He is credited as having been an integral figure in Labour’s 2017, 2022 and 2024 electoral campaigns. He was previously a top aide in the Muscat administration and held the role of Head of Government Communications.

Transport Malta’s former CEO, Mark Mallia, vacated the position after being named Head of Government Secretariat under the current Robert Abela administration.
