Lidl Malta Director Owen Micallef has marked a decade with the company, reflecting on a career that has seen him progress from District Manager to leading the business locally.
Mr Micallef joined Lidl Malta in 2016 as a District Manager before moving into the role of Sales and Operations Manager, a position he held for three years. He has since been serving as Director for more than two years.
In comments shared to mark the milestone, Mr Micallef described the past decade as both professionally rewarding and personally meaningful, highlighting the role of colleagues in shaping his experience.
“Ten years have flown by, and looking back on the journey from District Manager to Director at Lidl Malta, I am filled with gratitude,” he said, adding that the company has been “more than just a workplace”.
Reflecting on his early days, he recalled the uncertainty of stepping into a new role. “I still remember my first day as a District Manager: the ‘day one’ anxiety and the uncertainty of stepping into something brand new without quite knowing what lay ahead,” he noted.
He emphasised that the relationships built over the years have been central to his journey. “What has made this career journey even more beautiful are the people I’ve met along the way… everyone has been a lesson learnt.”

Mr Micallef also pointed to a strong sense of continuity within the organisation, noting that while the business has evolved, its underlying culture has remained consistent. “Walking into the shops or our Head Office, that same energy is still there, but it is now matched by a deep sense of pride in the journey we have shared as a united team,” he said.
Acknowledging his team, he stressed that leadership is not an individual achievement. “Success is never a solo journey, and any growth I’ve experienced is a reflection of the incredible team around me.”
In his remarks, Mr Micallef reiterated his appreciation for both his colleagues and the wider organisation, noting that being part of a company that “truly listens and cares about its people” has made the past ten years particularly rewarding.
“It is a genuine honour to guide this team and to be part of the Lidl story in Malta,” he said.
