In the ever-evolving world of cybersecurity, leadership isn’t always defined by titles or positions. For Malcolm Portelli, Chief Information Security Officer at Andaria Financial Services, a recent development proved just that.
Earlier this year, Mr Portelli submitted his nomination to represent the financial services sector on the Consultation Council of Malta’s National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre (NCC MT). While hopeful, he admits he had “no expectations for election.” When the results came in and he learned he had not been selected, he responded not with disappointment – but with determination.
“There is always a shimmer of hope when entering these things,” he wrote in a reflective LinkedIn post, “however I was not disappointed by the result and wish all the best to the incoming council.”
Rather than allowing the outcome to be a setback, Mr Portelli found it surprisingly energising. He described the reaction as “a strange sensation,” not of loss but of renewed inspiration. “On hearing that I was not elected, it was not disappointment that I felt but actually a flood of ideas on how I can do my part for the Information Security community outside of the council.”
This unexpected boost has reignited projects he had previously placed on hold. With a clear sense of purpose, he plans to bring these ideas to life in the coming months. “I hope to dedicate time to these ideas and bring them to fruition… and I will push them to have the impact I believe they are capable of having,” he stated, promising more news to come.
His response to the council decision reflects a wider truth about leadership in the cybersecurity sector and beyond. Influence does not always require a seat at the table. As he put it, “naturally I will continue to help in any way that I can in my capacity as a member of the community.”
While this chapter may not have unfolded as initially hoped, Mr Portelli’s mindset offers a timely reminder for professionals at all levels: Sometimes, it is not rejection, but redirection.
