In recent weeks, Malta has witnessed a troubling rise in serious road accidents and fatalities linked to drink driving. The statistics are more than just numbers, representing lives lost, families shattered and communities left to grieve.
Norman Aquilina, Group CEO at Farsons, has issued a strong public appeal for urgent and united action to tackle the country’s growing drink driving problem.
“The recent number of serious car accidents and fatalities linked to drink driving must be of grave concern to us all,” he wrote in a LinkedIn post.
“There is need for a collective call to action in tackling drink driving. We must prioritise road safety and encourage responsible drinking practices.”
His statement comes at a time when road safety is increasingly in the spotlight. Alcohol abuse remains a key contributing factor in a significant percentage of traffic collisions, with devastating consequences for victims and their families.
Farsons, a leading producer and distributor of alcoholic beverages and part of The Sense Group, has long advocated for responsible drinking, particularly through its awareness campaign, Drink Aware Malta.
The campaign’s website features a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) Calculator, which estimates a person’s BAC based on factors such as weight, gender, the amount of alcohol consumed and the time since drinking began.

“The authorities are urged to take all necessary measures to address drink driving and ensure that our roads are safe for everyone. This includes strengthening enforcement, increasing awareness campaigns and promoting responsible behaviour,” Mr Aquilina continued.
“Let’s work together to prevent such tragedies,” he concluded.
The CEO’s comments come in the wake of the latest tragic incident last Sunday, in which a 17-year-old is accused of driving under the influence in a hit-and-run that claimed the life of a 42-year-old food courier.
