Andrew Forace, Founder and Managing Director of Spades Wines & Spirits, brings over 15 years of expertise from the food and retail sector to curate Malta’s premier selection of premium wines and spirits. His keen understanding of market trends and customer needs drives Spades’ commitment to offering an unrivalled portfolio at competitive prices, delivered with speed and precision.

“I’m passionate about finding the perfect bottle for every client, whether it’s for a cozy dinner or a collector,” says Andrew, 37. His hands-on approach ensures every customer experiences Spades’ signature blend of quality, value, and exceptional service.”

Today, Spades is responsible for one of the largest and most carefully curated selections of spirits on the island, with in-store experienced wines experts, competitive prices, fast service guaranteed to cater for events spanning from intimate gatherings to grand occasions.

Andrew is no stranger to retail. His family ran shops selling groceries, clothing, and detergents, while he was growing up, giving him a strong grounding for the mechanics of commerce from a young age. This also fostered a clear drive to build independently and create something new.

“I always knew I wanted to do my own thing,” he recalls. In fact, it wasn’t long before he ventured into importing products from the UK and distributing them locally, operating more as a wholesaler than a retailer. Andrew’s turning point materialised when he discovered an international wine brand, which was so successful locally, that it changed the course of his business entirely.

“That wine not only opened the door to the wines and spirits sector but also ignited a passion,” Andrew continues.

Starting out by selling wine to restaurants and supermarkets, Andrew gradually expanded his portfolio and built a website himself, a critical move that would see him position the business head and shoulders above his competitors at a critical point in time.

“I was always keen on doing things myself, and the website was no exception. This was just a few months before the COVID-19 pandemic froze all movement, and all activity went online. While everyone else was scrambling to get their digital presence going, we were ready to hit the ground running, as the site really took off,” Andrew smiles.

At that point, Andrew saw the business making massive strides, taking control of distribution, and carving a niche in the market. Today, Spades Wines and Spirits has two outlets, one in Mrieħel and another in Swieqi, and has established itself as a go-to destination for premium wines and spirits in Malta.

With some 800 different whiskies, and over 1,800 spirits to choose from, customers are bound to find the right drink for their tastes.

“We are focusing on a specialised selection of whiskies as well as anything required for the cocktails bar, with special discounts and hard to finds items. No matter how refined or generic a request is, we are guaranteed to be able to help. From premium tequilas, rums, and gins, all carefully curated, we are always bringing in new brands,” Andrew stresses.

Spades has differentiated itself from its competition with competitive pricing, a sleek and efficient website, and a strong focus on service. Live chat and quick turnaround times mean customers can finalise a deal in minutes.

“Fast service and customer care are what keep people coming back,” Andrew says. SEO rankings and a reputation for premium quality have also helped Spades punch above its weight. But Andrew is not one to rest on his laurels. “You’re either growing or you’re dying,” he says bluntly.

Part of that growth comes from being ahead of the curve. Andrew constantly monitors international winemakers, distributors, and even pop culture references to spot new shifts in consumer tastes.

“Tequila, for example, is one category on the rise. Premium tequilas are picking up as it is currently enjoying a remarkable bout of popularity among the young. While no alcohol is truly healthy, 100% blue agave tequila, which is found in the more premium brands, in fact contains a lower sugar and carb content, when compared with other spirits. So, while it is still alcohol, and consumption should always be done in moderation, it is becoming a relatively healthier choice,” Andrew notes.

At the same time, whisky continues to dominate locally, particularly in colder months. Rum and gin peak in summer, although the gin craze has now stabilised.

“Wine trends, meanwhile, reflect global shifts. Italian wines remain the biggest sellers locally, while New Zealand labels continue to shine and French varieties are coming back into focus,” Andrew observes.

“Since we import more than 300 highly rated international wines from all over the world, we are always more than happy to help customers choose the right bottle that fits their occasion, providing a wide variety that suits everyone’s needs and pockets. It’s quite a remarkable USP we are very proud of,” Andrew remarks.

“Looking ahead, we are looking at expanding our presence with a third retail location which will make it even easier for customers to find us more conveniently. Furthermore, we also want to penetrate the restaurant sector with our unrivalled selection of wines, which requires its own specialisation.”

So, what advice does Andrew give to those exploring new wines? “Take an interest. Try to understand what grape varieties you like and do not hesitate to ask. There is endless information available on virtually anything nowadays, no less wine. Then don’t be scared to trust your sommelier. Be adventurous and try new things.”

Looking to supply some wisdom to budding entrepreneurs, Andrew’s determination translates into his own counsel. “Build your own network of connections. Leave no stone unturned. Be persistent, but more than that, keep your finger on the pulse,” Andrew concludes.
